The European Commission published a Green Paper entitled “Unlocking the potential of cultural and creative industries”. This Green Paper raises issues and asks important questions. The answers will have a profound impact on Europe – ‘Unlocking the potential of cultural and creative industries’ is a significant undertaking … and success is neither guaranteed nor will it be easy.
In Ireland we have a particular set of issues around the ‘Culture & Arts’, ‘Creative, Design & Applied Arts Sector’ and ‘Business Innovation’ areas of commercial activity – and the education, distribution and performance infrastructure that nurtures and supports creative output in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs).
Culture and Creativity are central topics in this Green Paper but of course Culture and Creativity spill-over into Business & Innovation, Education, the development of the city, and impact on issues like digital content distribution, digital production, creative collaboration, fusing the digital and physical worlds, taking Irish culture and creativity onto global markets, using Culture and Creativity competitively for economic development, and experiencing, making and expressing Creativity everywhere and all the time.
The fact that the EU Green paper is seeking to generate dialogue on the subject of how we can “Unlock the potential of cultural and creative industries” raises many questions including the most obvious – Why has this potential not been unlocked before? Is there really potential to be unlocked? Will policies that are developed from a wide cross-section of European regions work in Ireland? What are the changes that we must make in order to Unlock the potentials?
A number of professionals from various fields have come together to present their responses to the Green Paper. A media industry briefing/public forum is taking place on Wednesday 7th July in the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar. It runs from 10.30am to 12.00 noon.
