Portfolio Night Goody Bag
Thursday 26th of May, saw the 9th annual Portfolio Night. This is the second time the event has been hosted in Ireland and once again, it’s supported by Ogilvy Advertising.
For those who are new to Portfolio Night, it’s a global event happening in 30 cities simultaneously, where aspiring young advertising copywriters, art directors and designers get to meet with creative directors in a fast-paced evening of advice, networking and recruitment… or a “speed-dating for creatives”!
Wearing my “Design Educators” hat, I was delighted to be invited by the team at Ogilvy to attend. I was duly impressed by how well run the evening was, each young creative had 3 fifteen minute one-to-one mentoring sessions with leading creative directors from the Irish industry. Aside from the formal sessions it was a fantastic opportunity for graduates to network with colleagues and senior creatives from the Irish design and advertising industry.
Eight of my own DIT final year BA in Visual Communication students attended, a number of which secured interviews or call backs directly from attending Portfolio Night. The feedback from the night was incredibly positive, with the students viewing the advice they received about their work as invaluable. But it wasn’t all hard work and networking, there was a social aspect to the evening, a lot of informal chat and conversation which added to the wonderful atmosphere of the evening.
And portfolio night didn’t just cater for designers or advertisers. Photographers like Dave Campbellgioi and Illustrators like Steve Simpson were there too give their advice to aspiring creatives too.
Alex Gibson from The Persuaders was there to interview participants for the Persuaders podcast and was also providing a video Livestream of the evening for those who couldn’t make it there in person.
